Remember, you are what you repeatedly do. It’s all about those small, intentional choices that add up over time. And know that every little habit you cultivate brings you closer to your goals!
Habits: The Key to Consistency
One of the biggest mistakes people make when setting goals is trying to tackle everything at once or they write down every action item in a long, long list. Think about it: have you ever set a goal to launch an online course or save a large sum of money or build an engaging online presence? It can feel overwhelming! Instead of focusing on the big picture or that endless list, let’s think about the things we can do every single day to achieve those goals.
Habits are tiny actions that lead to significant changes over time. For example, if your goal is have 250 email subscribers in the next 3 months, start with a habit of posting on social media at least three times a week. Gradually increase that to posting and engaging with your audience each week until social media engagement becomes part of your routine. This step-by-step approach not only makes the process less intimidating but also builds momentum as you achieve each mini-milestone.
Habit Stacking: Making Change Easier
One effective technique for building new habits is called habit stacking. This involves attaching a new habit to an existing one. For instance, if you already have a habit of brewing tea every morning, you could stack a new habit onto it by doing five-minutes of gratitude journaling while your tea brews. By linking new behaviors to established routines, you’re more likely to stick with them.
The Importance of Consistency Over Perfection
When it comes to creating lasting change, consistency is far more important than perfection. Many people give up on their goals after a slip-up, thinking they’ve failed. But setbacks are a normal part of the journey! Instead of abandoning your goals after a misstep—like missing posting on social media for one week—focus on the next small step you can take toward getting back on track.
Remember, progress is progress, no matter how small. Celebrate those little victories along the way! Each time you take action toward your goal—whether it’s reading for personal development or engaging in mindfulness practices—you reinforce the habit and build momentum.
Creating Routines That Support Your Goals
Now that we understand the power of habits and consistency, let’s talk about how to create routines that support continuous progress toward your aspirations.
Step 1: Schedule It
If you do nothing else today, commit to scheduling time for your goals. Momentum relies on taking action every single day. Life gets busy; distractions are everywhere! That’s why having a structured plan creates focus and keeps you accountable.
Also start by blocking out specific times in your calendar everyday for working on your goals and that is where your action items get done. Treat these time slots as non-negotiable appointments with yourself. Whether it’s dedicating 30 minutes each morning for exercise or setting aside time in the evening to read, consistency is key. Some people’s schedules are all over the place but building in times into your calendar for the ‘light you up’ work is key! I’ll do a time blocking podcast at the end of this series, where I dive into how to actually get the work done at the right time and how to calendar it for the biggest impact.
Step 2: Create a Chain of Wins
Another way to get consistent with your habits is to create a chain of wins. You can leverage this principle by tracking your daily habits as well. Use a habit tracker or simply mark off each day you complete your goal on a calendar. As the chain grows longer, it becomes increasingly painful to break it—and that motivates you to keep pushing forward! But I will preface this with the fact that you have to start off slow. Choose one habit to start with, I use it while I learn Spanish, the Duolingo app actually does the tracking for me but totally keeps me accountable and I love seeing my ‘streak’.
Step 3: Find Your Motivation
Understanding what drives you is crucial for maintaining momentum. You’ve identify what inspires you to achieve your goals in the previous episodes. If you find you are going off course start writing down your 3-4 goal statements daily and include your ‘why’ and keep them visible as reminders during challenging times. Also look at your assigned deadlines for achieving milestones, and add them to your routines. Having clear timelines creates urgency and helps you stay focused on what matters most.
Adapting Your Goals Along the Way
As we work towards our dreams, it’s essential to remain flexible and open to change. Life evolves, and so should our goals! Here are some techniques for maintaining enthusiasm and adapting as needed:
Regular Check-Ins
Schedule regular check-ins with yourself—weekly—to assess your progress and reflect on what’s working and what isn’t. Are there areas where you’re struggling? Are there habits that need adjusting? Use this time to recalibrate your action plans based on what you’ve learned about yourself during the process.

Don’t forget to celebrate every small victory along the way! Each achievement reinforces positive behavior and keeps motivation high. Treat yourself when you reach milestones—whether it’s enjoying a favorite snack or taking some well-deserved downtime.

Having the right people in your corner can make all the difference when building momentum. Seek out accountability buddies or join groups where members share similar goals and challenges. Connecting with others who understand your journey provides encouragement during tough times and helps keep momentum going.
